A long-running dispute has disrupted operations at Craigslea Community Kindergarten in Chermside West, prompting some families to withdraw children and leaving the centre staffed by temporary employees.

The situation stems from the resignation of several members of the parent-run management committee earlier this year, which resulted in former treasurer Thomas D’Souza taking on a leading role. Concerns about committee membership and the way the centre is being managed have since been raised by some parents and staff.

C&K, which oversees a network of kindergartens, confirmed it has paused funding to the Chermside West centre and referred the matter to the Education Department. The association said families and staff had voiced worries about the shortage of volunteers on the committee.

In recent weeks, the permanent staff team has departed and been replaced by agency educators. The transition has unsettled some families, who say their children’s routines and relationships have been disrupted. A number of parents have chosen to keep their children at home rather than send them to the service under its current arrangements.

Mr D’Souza, speaking on behalf of the kindergarten, has rejected suggestions the centre is operating outside its rules. He maintains the committee remains properly constituted and that the use of temporary staff is consistent with past practice.

The Fair Work Commission has also noted alleged tensions between the management committee and staff in recent months. While the committee had raised concerns about industrial action, the Commission found staff absences were supported by medical certificates.

C&K said it is working with the Education Department to support the kindergarten in resuming regular programs. Meanwhile, the service continues to operate with relief staff while the dispute remains unresolved.
