Shop Exclusive for Generation Z Opens in Chermside

Whilst other businesses are busy targeting Millennials, a Brisbane mother-and-daughter tandem has another market in mind – Generation Z. They have identified a gap in the market for this generation and has launched their Harper Bee brand for them.

Credit: Harper Bee Facebook

Gen Z, born from 1995 to 2010, are the children of Generation X and the ones who have grown up with the internet. Considered as “digital natives,” Gen Z are distinctly wired to all information around the world.

According to the Urban Dictionary, Gen Z are more cautious and conservative because they are born when there is a technological revolution, war on terror, and global campaign for multiculturalism.

Gen Z may sound like a hard market to capture, but Brisbane mother and daughter Janine Burford and Jessica Wood are certainly willing to try.

Harper Bee stores opened in Westfield Chermside and Toowoomba this year.

We celebrate each and every girl’s uniqueness and individuality and are so happy to have them as part of our Harper Bee community! Credit: Harper Bee Facebook

Ms Burford perceives Gen Z as very particular and on-trend. She said that currently, there are no shops that cater to their needs. Realising this opportunity, she and her daughter created products that are no longer babyish but at the same time don’t look like something that mothers would buy for themselves.

Credit: Harper Bee Facebook

Harper Bee has all the stuff that Gen Z will otherwise have difficulty finding from other shops. The store has decorations for the bedrooms and desks, the latest technology, cute jewellery, beauty products, weekend clothing, over night stuff for sleepovers, and gift options for the BFFs.

But the mother-and-daughter tandem does not want to stop there. They are calling on Gen Z and their parents to tell them what else are they looking for. Anyone is welcome to send in their suggestions here.

“Experiencing cancer first hand also means you become experienced in dealing with matters of self confidence, resilience, acceptance and how to be happy (I’m still not perfect at it, but I’m better than I was). I am also a big believer in that being involved in your community, the wider world and giving back (or paying it forward) feeds and nurtures the soul, which in turn, builds happiness from within,” Katrina said.

How to Celebrate Harry Potter Book Night in Chermside

The very first book of the Harry Potter series has been published twenty years ago. To celebrate the momentous occasion, Bloomsbury U.K. is inviting everyone to the Harry Potter Book Night celebration, with the theme Fantastic Beasts, on the 1st of February 2018.

While the publication had personally organised activities for classrooms around the U.K., muggles in Chermside need not miss this once in a lifetime moment.

Good news is that there are ways for children and parents to celebrate the 20th year of the beloved Harry Potter series without leaving the suburb.

The Chermside Library is participating in the worldwide celebration through its own Harry Potter Book Night on the 1st of February from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The library will follow the Fantastic Beasts theme and children ages 5-10 years are invited to come dressed as their favourite witch or wizard characters.

To help guests out with their costume, Fantastic Beasts face painting tips can be downloaded here.

Here is another costume idea:

There will also be Fantastic Beasts-themed activities and games. Even the snacks to be served at the Chermside Library would follow the Fantastic Beasts theme.

Tip: Be sure to review trivia on Fantastic Beasts as there will be various quizzes on this!

The event is free but bookings are required to reserve slots. Call 3403 7200 to reserve your place.

Parents Can Share the Magic!

Bloomsbury U.K. published the first Harry Potter Book in 1997 so the very first fans and readers of the Harry Potter series would have been the parents (and other people from their generation) themselves!

So whilst the celebration at the Chermside Library is exclusive to the younger ones, parents need not to be disheartened as they can participate as well.

All they need to do is take photos of the Harry Potter Book Night celebration. Share the best photos on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook using the official hashtag from Bloomsbury: #HarryPotterBookNight.

Be sure not to miss the celebration. Head on out to the Chermside Library!

St Gerard’s Christmas Lights Display Won 4KQ Competition

St Gerard’s Christmas Lights Display of Our Lady of The Angels Chermside was awarded the Best Light Display Overall and 7 News Best Church and Community Group Award in the annual 4KQ Christmas Lights Competition. Winning the Best Light Display Overall was a milestone for the church as it was the first time that it won in the category in the last 15 years.

In media interviews, Chermside parish priest Fr Gerard McMorrow shared that there were less than 12 people who helped the church in setting up the Christmas lights display. Fr Gerard hires a cherry picker so that he can assemble the angel and lights on the church roof.

In another interview, Fr McMorrow said that he believed the lights had been instrumental in drawing thousands of people to attend the Christmas Vigil Mass. He noted that this number was bigger than the usual attendees that the church had in the previous years. The parish priest highlighted that the St Gerard’s Christmas Lights Display has put the church on the map, but, more importantly it influenced the community to stay in the church rather than at the malls. He also believed that the Christmas Lights Display brought the church and Christmas traditions closer to the hearts of the younger generation. As an additional benefit, the parish’s Christmas Festival had helped them with needed church renovations.

Meanwhile, Our Lady of The Angels Chermside’s weekend masses every Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and Sundays at 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. continues for 2018. Reconciliation Saturday will take place as usual at 4:15 p.m. Weekday Masses continues every Mondays at 8:30 a.m. and during Fridays at 9:00 a.m. Assumption Vigil, meanwhile, is scheduled on the 14th of August at 7:00 p.m.
