Families seeking a place at Craigslea State High School for 2027 face a tightly managed intake, with Department of Education figures showing the Chermside West school is currently operating 10.4 per cent above its official capacity.
Department data recorded 1,241 students at Craigslea in February—including 204 in Year 7—against a published Student Enrolment Capacity of 1,124. The difference of 117 students continues a five-year rise, up from 1,147 students in 2021 and 1,224 in 2024.
Catchment Growth Takes Priority Over Capacity Caps
Exceeding the target does not mean the school has breached state policy. Under Department of Education rules, principals must restrict out-of-catchment admissions so places remain available for local residents without requiring extra facilities.
However, high schools are legally required to enrol all eligible students residing within their designated geographic boundary, even if local growth pushes total numbers past the published threshold.

Strict Controls Put on Out-of-Catchment Intake
To manage demand, Craigslea enforces strict controls under its gazetted enrolment management plan. Enrolment packs for 2027 are available for local residents, while general out-of-catchment applications for the current school year have closed.
Out-of-catchment families seeking 2027 entry can submit an Expression of Interest to join a waiting list, but places are not guaranteed. Successful applicants will be notified in Semester 2.
Places in Craigslea’s specialised Volleyball, Music, and Science programs are also tightly capped, with out-of-catchment offers extended only after local demand is met and a buffer is reserved for future local growth.

Classroom Data Shows No Physical Overcrowding
The capacity threshold serves as an administrative benchmark rather than a direct measurement of physical floor space. Published performance data indicates classrooms are not overcrowded, with Craigslea’s 2024 annual report listing average class sizes of 24 students in Years 7 to 10 and 17 in Years 11 and 12—both well under departmental targets of 28 and 25 students respectively.
For families planning ahead for 2027, local residents retain guaranteed access, while out-of-catchment applicants face a highly managed waitlist process.
